bringing out the hook ...
well, hooks ...
Little S got this beautiful, handmade carving knife, with a handle made from reindeer antler, as a yule present.
We brought back some twigs of juniper from the forest and carved crochet
hooks. They are wonderfully unlike each others, and silky to the touch.
I've never thought of carving my own crochet hooks before - but after making these I will never buy one, ever again. They're just as good as bought ones, and to my eyes also more pleasant to look at. Encouraged by our carving, my husband made this pretty spoon, might just be the right thing for scooping sugar in the coffee ...
Do you like to make things from wood?
Oh, so beautiful. The wood so fresh and waiting for the lovely patinas that will come from your hand oils. I am totally smitten with the knife... where did you get it?? (I have quite a thing for reindeer, and I can't think of a better thing than a reindeer antler knife!!

DeleteThe knife was made by Jesper Voxnæs a long time ago. On the other side of the handle there's a moon with a fox. It's beautiful!Voxnæs has a web-shop:

but the knives looks quite different from this one. But you can use my picture and ask him if he still makes similar.
Oh, my goodness Mona. These are exquisite. I would love to make one, tho. I am not sure that I would know how. I can just picture the beauty of them and the smoothness..and the scent of all of your hands on them. I am blown away!
ReplyDeleteI wonder what woods would carve well. I am not sure that we have juniper, tho. perhaps we do.
I am in love!!!
Ellen, thank you for the kind words!
DeleteIt's really quite easy, as long as the knife is sharp and not too big. I carve it a bit rough, and make adjustments and finishes the shape while sanding. Juniper is the green bush behind my dog in the picture above, and in the second picture in the previous post. If you don't have it, I think the wood has to be something growing quite slowly so that it is solid, but also a bit flexible.
We love to make things out of wood but never thought of making crochet hooks! they are beautiful : )
